Homeowners Insurance

Before buying a house, an additional expense you should consider will be whether or not you want extra precaution through homeowners insurance. Homeowners insurance, also known as property insurance, provides financial protection to help pay or rebuild your house following disasters or damages.

This is an important cost to consider in case something unexpected happens to your new home.

What Is Homeowners Insurance?

Homeowners insurance helps cover exterior and interior damage to your home, replace damaged or stolen possessions, and provide liability for an injury or property damage caused by you or members of your family.

Each insurance company will have a liability limit, which determines the amount the company will cover in case of an accident.

Before purchasing homeowners insurance, you should discuss this factor, along with the specific insurance coverage details with your agent.

Is Homeowners Insurance Required?

Although having homeowners insurance is not required by law, mortgage lenders do require it before they will agree to finance your home purchase.

When purchasing a home, which is typically a person’s largest investment, it is important to do everything you can to protect it from unplanned damages and disasters.

If you are not protected by homeowners insurance and a disaster or damage occurs, you will most likely have to pay out of pocket or scramble to find other resources to help cover the cost.

What Are the Benefits of Homeowners Insurance?

There are many benefits to having homeowners insurance. Aside from protecting your home, it is a great feeling to know in the event of something unfortunate happening, you will be secured financially.

Other benefits of homeowners insurance include:

  • Coverage of personal belongings that are lost or stolen
  • Coverage includes temporary housing after a natural disaster
  • Reassurance knowing your house and items are protected

What Does Homeowners Insurance Not Cover?

Typically, homeowners insurance does not cover damage from natural disasters. But at Gallant Risk & Insurance Services, Inc., we offer separate policies to cover disasters like earthquakes and floods.

Homeowners insurance does not cover maintenance related problems.

Is Homeowners Insurance and Home Warranty the Same?

Homeowners insurance and home warranty are two separate costs that apply to different repairs.

A home warranty provides repairs and replacements of home systems and appliances such as ovens, water heaters, washer/dryers and pool. It is also not mandatory like homeowners insurance.
