RV and Boat Insurance

California and the surrounding areas have many different parks and bodies of water to explore, which is why many people invest in boats, recreational vehicles (RVs), and other leisure activity vehicles.

With these extra vehicles come additional responsibilities, which should be covered by an insurance plan to protect you in the event of an accident or damage caused by other means

RV and boat insurance ensures:

  • Coverage for both recreational and full-time RVs or boats.
  • Plans that cover all classes of motorhomes, trailers, campers, and toy haulers.
  • Policies that cover all types of watercraft.

Whether on the water or the road, RV and boat insurance can provide the coverage and peace of mind to help your family and friends enjoy a relaxing getaway knowing that you are covered by your insurance plan.

What Does RV and Boat Insurance Cover?

Any recreational vehicle with a motor can be covered by RV and boat insurance, with personal liability, bodily injury, and property damage included in the plan, similar to auto insurance. In the event of burns, head trauma, hypothermia, physical damage, or injuries, you want your insurance to cover the situation.

Motorhomes and boats require insurance in many states, similar to car insurance requirements. Your specific vehicles and activities will determine which coverage will benefit your circumstance, and you have different policy options for every vehicle.

  • Physical damage: Comprehensive coverage will protect your RV and boat from vandalism, theft, acts of nature, windshield damage, road hazards, and impact with animals. Collision covers damages to your RV or boat caused by an accident. Both of these types of coverage typically include a deductible.
  • Liability for bodily injury and property damage: In most states, this is the minimum insurance requirement for motorhomes, travel trailers, and boats. Liability insurance covers damage or injuries caused by you while driving your motorhome or boat and when you tow a travel trailer. However, your auto insurance usually covers liability for any trailer it is pulling. Liability insurance also covers legal fees resulting from an accident.
  • Uninsured/underinsured property damage and bodily injury: If an uninsured or underinsured driver damages your RV or boat, this coverage helps pay to replace or repair it and for any injuries you receive.
  • Medical payments: Medical bills may be covered for you and your passengers in the event of an accident, up to your chosen limit, regardless of fault.
  • RV Roof Protection: The roof of your travel trailer or motorhome can be covered to protect it from damage and wear and tear. You can add this protection to your physical damage coverage on your RV policy. This protection can be upgraded to pay for damages to other areas of your RV caused by a leaky roof. A deductible is typically required, and older RVs and travel trailers may not qualify.

Travel Trailers

Your automobile insurance may or may not cover liability requirements for your travel trailer, and you should check with your agent to learn what your current policy includes.

Like RVs and boats, if you are financing your travel trailer, your lender will request documentation for full coverage insurance. If your auto insurance provider doesn’t offer RV or travel trailer insurance, you’ll need to purchase a policy from an insurance company that does.

Homeowner’s insurance may provide some coverage if the travel trailer is parked on your property, but not when it is parked at a campsite or other location.

Because auto or homeowner’s insurance is often insufficient, having RV insurance protects you under most circumstances wherever the trailer is located.

Watercrafts Covered by RV and Boat Insurance

Being financially protected from damage or injuries to others caused by you while using a watercraft is not only wise but required in California. Additional insurance will cover your watercraft and trailer if stolen or damaged.

Boat insurance covers most types of boats, including:

  • Fishing boats
  • Powerboats
  • Pontoon boats
  • Sailboats
  • Personal watercraft, such as WaveRunners, Seadoos and Jet Skis
