California Auto Insurance Limits – How Much Should You Choose?

One of the most common things drivers who have California auto Insurance do is drive with liability policies only because, they think that auto insurance is something that they will never need to use. The reality is that auto insurance limits are something that you should never compromise on because, one accident or one lawsuit can ruin a driver financially.

What’s required in California?

Regardless if you live in Corona, Riverside, or elsewhere in Southern California you are required by the state to have the following minimum auto insurance coverage:

  • $15,000 – For the personal injury or death of one individual
  • $30,000 – For the injury or death of one individual.
  • $5,000   – For damaging another vehicle or property

Do you think those limits will cover very much in an accident? If you are found liable, you could be paying for medical bills for the injured party, auto repair bills, income lost from not being able to work, injury treatment bills for the duration of their treatment, pain and suffering from both the discomfort from their injuries and not being able to perform their job due to the injuries. Don’t forget about the lawyer bills associated with a major accident as well, those bills can add up quickly!

How Much Coverage Is Enough?

Although you may only get into one car accident in your life, the reality is that some California auto insurance policies will stop at between $100,000 and $500,000 of auto insurance coverage, and this means that if you’re sued for over $500K, you will be responsible for paying the remaining amount that your auto insurance company didn’t cover.

Think About Your Assets

Let’s say that you currently have assets ranging in value from $300,000 to $1 million dollars. If this is the case you should choose auto insurance coverage levels that are in proportion to the assets that you own because, it’s very possible that you could lose your assets in a lawsuit if you lack sufficient auto insurance.

For best results with choosing an auto insurance premium you should consider adding additional coverage, including a Personal Umbrella policy, to have in addition to the auto insurance policy that you choose. Rates are very inexpensive for the coverages you receive.
